Melvin "Butch" Butts Obituary

Melvin Ray “Butch” Butts, age 71, of Farina, Illinois, passed away at 12:37 p.m. on Wednesday, October 23, 2019 in Clay County, Illinois.

Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, October 28, 2019 at the St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, St. Peter, Illinois with a one-hour visitation prior to the service. Reverend Ryan Meyer will be officiating. Burial will take place at the Farina Cemetery, Farina, Illinois. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 27, 2019 at the St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, St. Peter, Illinois. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the St Peter’s Lutheran LWML.

Butch was born on October 7, 1948 in Vandalia, Illinois, the son of Melvin R. Butts and Eva C. (Hawkey) Butts. Butch married Terrie Ann Hassebrock on June 10, 1974 in Mt Vernon, Illinois. Butch was a self-made man, owning and operating his own business. Butch served two terms as Mayor for the village of Farina, Illinois. He loved God and was a member of the St. Peter’s Lutheran Church.  Butch loved to sing, playing guitar, country music, and making up songs. For Butch, the song has ended, but the melody lingers on. Butch would love to throw out quotes while speaking, always joking, smiling and laughing. He had a nickname for everyone, and he gave of himself freely to those in need. He loved people and getting to know their story. Butch loved his family and cherished the time he spent with them, spoiling them endlessly.

Butch is survived by his wife, Terrie Ann Butts of Farina, Illinois; one daughter, Betheney Baird (husband Matt) of Farina, Illinois; one son, Allen Butts (wife Kendra) of Altamont, Illinois; two sisters, Charlotte Allen (companion Dennis Perry) of Alma, Illinois and Donna Kay Owens (husband Charley) of Alma, Illinois; three grandchildren, Wyatt Butts, Gracelin Butts, and Harrison Baird, and numerous brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Melvin and Eva Butts.
