She was born August 11, 1918, the daughter of Charles and Alma (Strawn) Louder in Mattoon, IL. The family moved to Mason when Alice was 2 years old. Alice learned to play the piano when she was young and was a natural musician, able to play any instrument by ear. She met Herschel Broom at a local dance and they were married on March 4, 1936.

During WWII, while Herschel was in the Army, Alice and her sister Edith worked at the Illinois Glove Factory in Effingham, IL. After the war they moved to Edgewood where they started Brooms Orchard raising and selling apples, peaches and strawberries. In 1957, they moved to Mason starting their fruit market where Alice loved selling the fruit out of the market. She liked to create beautiful floral arrangements and various craft items to sell in her shop called The Posey Patch. Alice also liked to sew. She was a Sunday school teacher at the Mason Christian Church where she and Herschel were members. Our fondest memory is hearing her beautiful voice sing hymns and how amazed we were that she didn't even look at the hymnal, but knew every word by heart. She volunteered regularly in Mason community activities. She was also a clerk at the Mason Post Office.

Alice leaves behind her two daughters, Glenda Ready (husband Jerry) of Mahomet, IL and Judy Mahannah (husband Gary) of Decatur, IL; eight grandchildren, Bob Ready, Joy Johannes, Angela Borchelt, Sheri Musick, Tyce Mahannah, Chuck Mahannah, Tammy Mahannah, eighteen great grandchildren and five great great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Herschel Broom in 2002; brothers, Urban and Melvin; sisters, Alene and Edith and one grandchild, Debbie Espinoza.
