James Edward Holmes, age 88, of Gilbertsville, Kentucky passed away Baptist Health Hospital in Paducah .

Funeral service will be at 12:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 11, 2024 at Pagel Funeral Homes in Edgewood with a two hour visitation prior to the service. Interment will be at Edgewood Cemetery. Memorials may go to Edgewood Cemetery or the donor's choice.

James was born on January 24, 1936 in Effingham County, Illinois, the son of Lester B. and Madonna M. (Curry) Holmes. He married Nelda L. Edwards on December 28, 1959 in Effingham. James served in the United States Army. He enjoyed fishing, watching the Chicago Bears on TV, coon hunting with his dogs, and spending time with his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Nelda Holmes of Gilbertsville, Kentucky; sons, James L. Holmes (Debbie) of Olney, Stephen Holmes (Kelly) of Council Bluffs, Iowa, and Benjamin Holmes (Dawn) of Altamont; sister, Jeanie Yocum of Effingham; 3 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, and 1 great great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lester and Madonna Holmes; and brother-in-law, Earl Yocum.
