Lina Lavern (Haslet) Scoles, 94, of St. Elmo, Illinois, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, at the Haven of St. Elmo.
Visitation will be held Saturday, November 1, 2025, from 11:00 a.m. until the service at 1:00 p.m. at Pagel Funeral Home in St. Elmo, Illinois. Pastor Jim Giffin will officiate. Burial will follow immediately at Maplewood Cemetery, St. Elmo, Illinois. In place of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or to the donor's choice.
Lina was born on April 25, 1931, in Harvey, Illinois, to Marion W. and Minnie M. (Naylor) Haslet. She married Abraham L. "Abe" Scoles on December 7, 1946, in Effingham, Illinois. His work moved them from state to state, but Lina settled in easily wherever they landed—joining local bowling and golf leagues and making friends everywhere she went.
Lina began waiting tables at just fourteen and took great pride in working hard from such a young age. Always quick with a smile, a joke, or a feisty comeback, she later became known around town as "The Sno Cone Lady" when she owned the Tropical Sno in St. Elmo.
She loved laughter, good company, and a little fun wherever she could find it. Her favorite shows included America's Funniest Home Videos, Jeopardy!, and Wheel of Fortune. She enjoyed summers with her grandkids, afternoons on the golf course or at the bowling alley, and the occasional trip to Walmart. Her fried egg sandwiches were the best, and she never turned down a Lotto ticket, scratch-off, or a good game of Bingo. Pretty solar lights and watching for hummingbirds brought her endless joy.
Above all, Lina loved her family deeply and often said she was "so blessed to have such a beautiful family."
She is survived by her children, Lynda Joyce Werner of St. Elmo, IL; Rick Scoles (Lori) of Tucson, AZ; and Annette Ray of Draper, UT. Grandchildren: Tony Werner (June) of Shady Shores, TX; Jennifer Trussel (Clay) of Hattiesburg, MS; Jeff Werner (Kelly) of St. Elmo, IL; Amanda Payne (Donnie) of St. Elmo, IL; Kelly Scoles of Phoenix, AZ; Kevyn Langston (Jamison) of Draper, UT; and Kennedy Nettleton (Sam) of Salt Lake City, UT. Great-grandchildren: Logan, Rose, Warren, Claire, Frankie, Auden, Asher, and Parker; and great-great-grandchildren, Atlas and soon-to-be-born Lillie.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Abe; brothers Marion, Herbert, and Alford Haslet, and Bill Myers; sisters Ida Rhoades, Dolly Roach, and Sue Riley; son-in-law, Willard Werner; and her cherished puppy, Trapper.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Haven of St. Elmo and HSHS Hospice for their loving care and kindness during Lina's final days.
