Barry Coughlin Obituary

Barry Allen Coughlin, age 58, of St. Elmo, Illinois passed away at 7:21 p.m. Wednesday, May 25, 2022 at St. Anthony Memorial Hospital in Effingham, Illinois.

There will be a visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 31, 2022 at Pagel Funeral Homes in St. Elmo, Illinois. Memorials may go to ALS Association St. Louis Regional Chapter or the donor’s choice. 

Barry was born on November 22, 1963 in Centralia, Illinois, the son of Larry R. Coughlin and Shirley K. Tackitt. Barry was a 1981 graduate of St. Elmo High School. He attended Lincoln Trail College AAS Petroleum Tech in Robinson, Illinois. He also graduated from Manatee Community College AAS in Bradenton, Florida. He was the president of Little Egyptian Chapter Illinois Professional Land Surveyors Association from 1996 to 1997. He was President of Darrell E. Gerkin Professional Surveyors and Maps. Barry was diagnosed with ALS in 2001. He wrote and published his own book titled “Living the Dream” in August of 2008. Barry was in the process of writing a sequel to his book “Living the Dream” titled “The Bell” that will be finished and published in the future.  He loved golfing, backpacking and hiking, and making memories with his family and friends.

Barry’s family would like to extend their heartfelt thankyous to all of the caregivers that helped out during his time of need.

He is survived by his parents, Shirley Henson (husband Tom) of Xenia, Illinois; brothers, Troy Walker (wife Hannah) of St. Elmo, Illinois, Tony Walker (wife Rebecca) of Altamont, Tommy Henson (wife Brandi) of Xenia, and Joey Henson of Louisville; sisters, Julie Duckwitz (husband Dennis) of St. Elmo and Shelley Hunt (husband Rob) of Xenia; special friend, Debbie Daggett of Santa Barbara, California, and many special nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Larry Coughlin and sister, Sheila Henson.
