Raleigh "Gene" Wharton Sr.

    Raleigh “Gene” Eugene Wharton Sr., age 93, of Altamont, Illinois passed away on Sunday, February 18, 2024 at his home in Altamont, Illinois

Graveside service will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 24, 2024 at Mahon Cemetery in rural Edgewood with Ed Wojnar officiating. Military Rites will be observed. Memorials may go to Salem Cemetery, Mahon Cemetery, or the donor’s choice.

Gene was born on March 28, 1930 in Gilmore, Illinois, the son of Raleigh Edwin and Esta Pearl (Siddens) Wharton. He married Harriett Calhoun on August 11, 1951 in Altamont and celebrated 66 years of marriage. He was a member of the Asberry United Methodist Church, and Altamont American Legion Post #512, National Farmer’s Association, and DAV chapter 7.

He is survived by his sons, Scott Wharton (wife Jo Ellen of Greenville and Loren “Tater” Wharton (wife Stacy) of Mason; daughters, Marsha Nolan (husband Bob) of Farina, Carol Ruffner (husband Jerry) of Mason, and Darcy Rhoades (husband Corey) of Littleton, Colorado; sister, Doris Stock of Decatur; daughter-in-law, Julie Wharton of Mason; sisters-in-law, Karen Wharton of Mason, and Mary Ellen Ross of Indiana; many grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren, and special friend, Betty Petzing.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Harriett Wharton; son, Raleigh Eugene Wharton Jr.; brother, Morris Wharton, and 1 grandchild.
